Feeding the City: Pathways to Sustainable Urban Policies

The event “Feeding the City: Pathways to Sustainable Urban Policies” aims to foster a dialogue on how local governments can transform urban food systems toward sustainability, health, and social justice. The event will bring together experiences from different Brazilian municipalities that have been developing innovative Food and Nutritional Security (FNS) policies, aligned with the SDGs, the New Urban Agenda, and the discussions at COP30. Given the urgency of the issue, the Food of Tomorrow Institute and the National Secretariat for Food and Nutritional Security of the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family, and the Fight Against Hunger (SESAN/MDS) have organized a panel that brings to the forefront inspiring experiences regarding urban food policies from cities participating in LUPPA – Urban Laboratory for Public Food Policies and the National Strategy for Food and Nutritional Security in Cities – Alimenta Cidades.
The program will feature reports from the municipal governments of Santarém (PA), Contagem (MG), João Pessoa (PB), Osasco (SP), São José dos Pinhais (PR), and Vitória da Conquista (BA), addressing initiatives such as public procurement from family farms, urban gardens, food banks, and food education projects. The meeting aims to highlight practical ways to strengthen municipal food governance and promote integrated solutions that address the climate, social, and economic challenges facing Brazilian cities.
