Strengthening urban food policies
One of the main challenges for cities, especially highly urbanized ones, is to guarantee sustainable food systems and the constitutional right to universal access to healthy diets. Conceived and coordinated by the Comida do Amanhã Institute with co-realization of ICLEI South America, LUPPA is the world’s largest laboratory of urban food policies and supports municipalities across Brazil in advancing their urban food agendas. Through technical support, annual in-person laboratories, exchange of experiences and mentoring between cities, as well as seminars and practical workshops, the program provides support for the development and implementation of public food policies, respecting the opportunities and challenges of each territory.
LUPPA activities are organized in annual cycles, called editions. Each edition begins with the selection of new cities through a public call aimed at municipalities with up to 1.5 million inhabitants. Forty percent of the slots are reserved for cities in the Legal Amazon region. Among the many activities of each LUPPA journey, the LUPPA LAB – an in-person meeting for municipal managers to exchange experiences – is held annually, followed by the mentoring phase, with exclusive workshops between mentor and mentored cities. Every two months, follow-up workshops are held with the entire LUPPA community.
